11/15/05 09:05 pm - malildragonfly - Westlife Flick The Christmas Switch

Irish boy band Westlife got the festive shopping season underway in central London on Tuesday when they turned on the famous Christmas lights in Oxford Street.
The four-member group, who boast a string of chart-topping singles including a Christmas number one, switched on the dazzling display featuring 260,000 bulbs and performed two of their hits.
"We never dreamed we'd be turning on the Oxford Street Christmas lights- it's a major honour," " the band's Kian Egan told the BBC.
The switch-on marked the culmination of the Light Up London campaign which invited people to sponsor a bulb with a minimum 5 pound donation for charity.
The Breast Cancer Campaign, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and Centrepoint, which helps homeless young people, will benefit from the funds raised.

Westlife toast double chart success

(Sunday November 06, 2005 07:03 PM)

Irish favourites Westlife are toasting a double success as their new album joined the band's latest single at the number one spot.

The boy band, who are the fifth biggest selling
act of the 21st century, top both the singles and albums charts after
their latest long player, Face to Face, pushed Robbie Williams into
second spot.

In the singles chart, the group stay ahead of
Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys - still in second slot with their
surprise breakthrough hit I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

Rapper Pharrell had the week's highest new entry,
at number three with Can I Have You Like That, which features glamorous
No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani.

Kate Bush remains in the Top Ten with her first single in 12 years, King of the Mountain, dropping four places to number eight.

Southampton's smoothest crooner Craig David
entered the chart at number four with Don't Love You No More, while
slinky synth outfit Goldfrapp's single Number 1 failed to live up to
its name - placed at number nine.

Rod Stewart claimed third spot in the albums
rankings with his latest classics collection, Thanks For The Memory -
Great American Songbook 4.

Katherine Jenkins is at number four with Living A Dream.

The Welsh soprano is soon to travel to Iraq to entertain troops.

She this year won the classical Brit award and performed at VE Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square.

Well done boys!

10/29/05 11:15 pm - malildragonfly - We're A Man Band

DON'T label the Westlife lads has-beens.
'We have sold 35 million records
so far and our last two albums did five to six million each, which is good by
any standard.

'If we are being labelled has-beens, I dread to think what other bands who
fare worse than us are called,' Westlife member Shane Filan told The New Paper
in a recent phone interview.

But yes, the fans have all grown up.

'Admittedly, we are more man band than boy band now. Our fans are no longer
the young teens any more - the youngest we have are aged 18 or 19 and they
stretch on to 40,' he said.

The six-year-old Irish quartet will release its seventh studio album, Face To
Face, which took 1 1/2 years to complete, on Monday.

'We wanted to make our best pop album ever. We are going back to our roots
with some really strong pop material,' said Filan, 26.

But he admitted that the musical landscape has changed.

'There are very few active pop bands at the moment. Pop has taken a back
seat, while rock is more in the limelight now.'

There have also been signs that the band might be slowing down.

Only two of their last six singles managed to reach No. 1 in the last two
years, as compared to their first seven singles, which all made their debuts at
the top spot on the charts.

Member Brian McFadden left Westlife in March last year, which ignited rumours
that the band might break up.

Its 2004 jazz album, Allow Us To Be Frank, was an attempt to broaden its
appeal beyond the pop market, but that did not go as planned, failing to hit No
1 - a first for Westlife.

So its future might hinge on the success of Face To Face.

Filan said that the announcement in August that member Mark Feehily is gay
and is in a relationship with Kevin McDaid of former boy band V was greeted with
tremendous support from their fans, which is, for the most part, female.

'There has not been one negative comment from our fans, which is pretty

'We have received a lot of fan mail from (people) showing their support,'
said Filan, who married his childhood sweetheart Gillian Walsh in 2003.

The couple have a 3-month-old daughter, Nicole.

The band's first single off the new album, a cover of Josh Groban's You Raise
Me Up, was released this week and Filan hopes that it will help Westlife triumph

'Admittedly, it is harder to get a No. 1 single these days. We just have to
wait, cross our fingers and hope for the best,' he said.

10/9/05 12:16 pm - malildragonfly - Feehily Relieved To Be Openly Gay

Gosh, this is old news now....

Members of Irish boyband WESTLIFE have spoken out in support of their gay
bandmate MARK FEEHILY's surprise engagement to his boyfriend KEVIN McDAID.

The FLYING WITHOUT WINGS stars were oblivious of Feehily's true sexuality for
five years, but they insist he has never been happier since coming out earlier
this year (05).

Singer SHANE FILAN says, "Mark is in a relationship and is happy in his life.
We've only known for a couple of years (that he is gay) but the decision to go
public was all his.

"In the last couple of months he has been the happiest I have ever seen him
and he's told me he's so happy.

"It's a huge relief not to have to keep his sexuality a secret anymore."
